Get Dwell wins the 2017 North Shore Choice Award for Best Handyman

Posted on 06 April 2017 | Category: Press

Get Dwell has won the 2017 North Shore Choice Award for Best Handyman Service.

We thank the readers of the Wilmette Beacon, Winnetka Current, Glencoe Anchor, Highland Park Landmark, Glenview Lantern, Northbrook Tower and the Lake Forest Leader newspapers for casting their votes and giving us this great honor.

“All of us at Get Dwell work hard every day to make sure our remodeling, repair and handyman services are the best in the business”, says Rocky Macias, Operations Manager at Get Dwell. “This, and the partnerships we have built with local family-owned hardware stores all across Chicagoland help ensure that our clients are getting the type of quality products and services that they can depend on. We are fortunate on the North Shore because we have some of the best hardware stores in the country (Lemoi Ace in Evanston, Millen Hardware in Wilmette, Bess Hardware in Northfield, Northbrook Ace, Mutual Ace in Highland Park, Lake Forest True Value and Libertyville Ace). Every one of these stores have served the North Shore community for multiple generations and allow us to give our clients much better products and quicker, more dependable services than having to rely upon the typical hit-or-miss, less service oriented stores like Home Depot or Lowes.”

Contact us online or give us a call at 847-922-3418 if you would like the best local and most dependable team to help with your next remodeling, painting or repair project.

You Said It: Shop at These Local, Family-Owned Hardware Stores

Posted on 09 February 2017 | Category: Press

By Darryl Rose for Make it Better

Local, trusted business relationships, especially those that last for generations, are hard to find. Fortunately, those of us who live in Chicago or the North Shore can find that kind of trusted advice right in our own neighborhood. Not only do we have some of the best hardware stores in the country, but our neighborhood hardware stores are also local, family-owned stores, the majority of which have been around for generations. Unbelievably, two of our hardware stores have been operating for five generations which means that the great, great, grandfathers and grandmothers of the current owners started the business by building the kinds of trusted relationships that continue today.

Like most of the small family-owned businesses that are no longer with us, Amazon and big-box stores such as Home Depot and Lowes have not been kind to the local hardware store. However, many of those stores who have worked tirelessly believed in superior customer service and built trust with every customer interaction have survived. According to a study by Independent We Stand, every time we spend a dollar at a local family-owned hardware store vs. a Home Depot or Lowes, two times the value of our money stays in our local community and supports the local economy helping to create local parks, Little League teams and bike paths.

Local family-owned hardware stores give us the kind of knowledgable help we can trust when we most need it and they add to the quality of life for our communities. The next time you have a project or need trusted advice think about supporting relative newcomers like Millen Hardware in Wilmette, Lake Forest Hardware and Libertyville Ace which have been serving our local communities for over two generations. Or visit Gordon’s Ace in Chicago and Northbrook Ace who have been giving us expert advice and the help we need for three generations. If you are in the neighborhood or live close by, stop by Lemoi Ace in Evanston or Mutual Ace in Highland Park who have been helping our neighbors with their home projects for over 5 generations. Now, those are businesses you can trust.

Entrepreneur Darryl Rose Built Success on Values and Rules That Every Mother Loves and Every Community Needs

Posted on 18 November 2016 | Category: Press

“‘Thank you for teaching my kid how to work!’ This is what I frequently hear from moms,” Darryl Rose, founder of Get Dwell, declares early in our interview. Those statements are just one of many examples that confirm that Rose grew his Chicago- and North Shore-based remodeling and handyman business on great values — adeptly creating opportunities that help others while providing outstanding service. His grin and twinkling eyes attest to the pleasure this brings him too.

Darryl RoseRose is the prototypical 21st century entrepreneur; he builds win/win scenarios for customers, employees, partners, and the community. It’s no surprise that Get Dwell has been voted “Best Of” by our Make It Better audience four out of five years.

Ironically, Rose still acts surprised that he became an entrepreneur working with his hands at all. With a good job in corporate sales, wife, two young children and a Wilmette home, Rose thought his path through life was set. But, he was happiest helping neighbors’ with their handyman needs and being a volunteer designer and builder of stage sets and other projects for his kids’ schools. His true calling was obvious to everyone else.

It took his wife, Beth — the person most likely to miss the security of his corporate life — to convince Rose to give it up and start a small home maintenance business out of their kitchen in 2005.

“Just leap and the net will appear,” Beth promised.

Get Dwell and our Hardware Partners featured in Qualified Remodeler magazine

Qualified Remodeler magazine

Qualified Remodeler magazine’s cover story features Get Dwell and the working partnership we first forged with Millen Hardware back in 2005. Since then, our partnerships with local, independently-owned hardware stores has successfully grown to 27 partner stores across Chicago and the northern suburbs.

Local hardware stores have always been and will continue to be the best place for knowledgeable product advice and helpful how-to tips. If a project demands more skills than a customer has or if it requires more work than the customer is willing to tackle, these stores can recommend Get Dwell’s services and be confident that their customers will be professionally served by a proven, insured, certified and trusted local resource. We’re able to help the stores become even more helpful to their customers.

Get Dwell’s partner stores are run by some of the best customer-focused hardware entrepreneurs in the country, the vast majority of whom are second- and third-generation business owners. “As an entrepreneur myself, my rule of thumb is to work with locally-owned hardware stores that share my passion for craftsmanship and a high standard of customer service,” Darryl Rose, President of Get Dwell says. Local hardware stores face an everyday battle against big box stores like Home Depot and Lowes and online companies like Amazon. Each of these competitors has recently launched or backed their own home installation companies; Redbeacon.com (Home Depot), Porch.com (Lowes) and Amazon Home Services. “Our 27 hardware store partners have survived and thrived,” Darryl emphasizes, “because they know what it takes to make customers happy, and everyday they go out of their way to prove that.”

According to the North American Retail Hardware Association, money spent at a local hardware store versus a big box store like Home Depot or Lowe’s makes it possible for three times the value of that money to go back into the local community where it belongs. “These monies,” says Darryl, “then end up directly benefitting our local communities in many ways, including increasing local home values and making these communities a more wonderful place to live.”

“Our 27 hardware store partners have survived and thrived,” Darryl emphasizes, “because they know what it takes to make customers happy, and everyday they go out of their way to prove that.”

How to Spot Hidden Damage from Wicked Winter Weather

Posted on 10 April 2015 | Category: General, Press

Darryl Rose of Get Dwell on CBS 2 CHICAGO offering solutions for basement flooding to Chicago area homeowners

Basement flooding is becoming increasingly common in the Chicago area and it is something more and more homeowners are guarding against. For many years, 90 percent of storms in Illinois produced less than 1 inch of rain but in recent years there has been an increase in the occurrence and intensity of 2-to-3 inch rainstorms. The Chicago area, topographically dominated by the glacial Lake Chicago plain can create a drainage nightmare for homeowners. The dense clay base of our region and the water level of Lake Michigan makes subsurface drainage highly ineffective. When big rains hit there is nowhere for the water to go and it can overwhelm homes and municipal systems designed to prevent flooding.

Basement flooding can occur from water pouring over the top of the foundation, through a leaking wall or floor crack, through the basement window, through the cove joint (where the wall and floor meet), the back up of an overwhelmed municipal sewer or storm water system or some other unique weak point, like a below-grade door. Fortunately, there are now flood prevention systems available so homeowners can avoid these disasters.

Having a dry basement is essential to the health of your home and with today’s advanced systems there is no need to worry “if” or “when” your basement will flood. If you need help understanding the cause of your basement flooding or how you can prevent flooding from occurring, call us at Get Dwell as we’d be happy to schedule a consultation.
