2. Turn the right direction!
If you have ceiling fans, run them year-round. They help get the most out of your AC in warm weather and circulate heated air in the colder months, which decreases energy bills. Now’s the time to change the direction of ceiling fans to clockwise to circulate warmed air and push it down from the ceiling.
3. Make a backup plan
Big, destructive storms as have occurred this year in the Chicago area can cause loss of electricity. Eliminate worry and inconvenience, save food from spoiling, and keep the heat and lights on. A backup generator connected to the natural gas line functions automatically as soon as power goes off. Invest in your peace of mind. Schedule a generator installation estimate
4. Keep the warm in, cold out
What’s the problem with shabby, worn doors and windows? Where do we start? They look dated and neglected. They can compromise your safety. They waste energy and cost you money. Problems include loose or missing caulking / weatherstripping, broken locks / hardware, loose or missing thresholds, little or no insulation. Now is a good time to repair or replace entryway and patio doors (French or sliding) and some or all the windows in your home. Replacement doors and windows are offered in a variety of sizes / styles / colors, including fiberglass, steel, wood. Enjoy cost savings with ENERGY STAR® rated, top-quality major brands such as Marvin, Pella, Alside, and Kolbe. Styles, shapes and materials can be customized for your home by our highly trained and certified installers.

Now is a good time to change batteries in devices that you rely upon for the safety and efficient operation of your home:
- smoke alarms
- exterior garage keypad
- CO2 detectors
- key fobs
- water alarms
- thermostats
- keyless remotes
- smart appliances (doorbells, home security system)
Stop by your neighborhood hardware store — they have 10-year batteries for many items!
6. Keep the cold out, the warm in
An inadequately insulated attic = a cold, drafty home. Lack of or too little insulation results in a cold, drafty home and increased energy bills (gas and electric). Proper insulation makes a home more comfortable, energy efficient and environmentally friendly. In addition, it helps to reduce outside noise and contaminants. Get Dwell utilizes industry-leading, science-based knowledge and the insulation materials best suited to your home, including foam, fiberglass batt, ROCKWOOL® and blown-in insulation. All are safe, effective and environmentally friendly. Request an estimate to get the process started
7. Clear the clutter
Get ready for holiday guests by clearing junk and clutter. We can remove junk and debris from your home, haul it away and dispose of it properly. Fast, same-day pickup service is available — no job is too big or small. Our efficient, hard-working team sweeps clean all areas when they’re done. Reach out for a junk pickup estimate
8. Clean up, down and everywhere
Come on … admit that you’re never going to get around to cleaning your crawlspace, attic or other neglected areas of your home. Want your basement ready for holiday entertaining? Just ask for help. Our professional cleaners work in teams of two. Wearing backpack vacuums, we use only organic cleaning products and bring all the equipment needed to clean your home. We’re talking top-down cleaning, wiping, vacuuming and mopping of all dirty surfaces.

9. Breathe easy
We spend 90% of our time indoors during cold weather. Indoor levels of pollutants are much higher than outdoor levels. With the right conditions and right level of moisture, spore-based and organic lifeforms multiply and grow, polluting indoor air. Forced air heating / cooling ductwork requires regular cleaning to remove microscopic dust, construction and environmental debris, human and pet dander. If you are not the original owner of your home, haven’t had ducts cleaned in more than a year, live with a dog or cat, or have had a remodeling project done recently, we recommend you request a duct cleaning estimate.
10. Automatic comfort
Installing automated thermostats can save you an estimated 23% on your heating and cooling costs. They even allow you to control your HVAC from your phone when you’re not home. Stop by your neighborhood hardware store — their experts can recommend the right thermostat for your home.
