Bathroom Remodeling and Renovation FAQs

Before hiring someone to remodel or renovate your bathroom, it helps to ask the right questions.

For Chicago and North Shore homeowners, bathroom remodeling and renovation projects often involve much more than simply replacing fixtures or updating finishes. Plumbing, electrical, waterproofing, ventilation, layout decisions and material selections can all affect the success of the project. This bathroom remodeling FAQ answers common questions about bathroom renovation and what to expect during the process — if you have any additional questions, we are are happy to answer them!

How long does a bathroom remodel usually take?

The timeline for a bathroom remodel depends on the size of the space, the scope of work, material selections, and whether any hidden conditions are uncovered once demolition begins. At Get Dwell, our experience helps us identify the kinds of issues that may arise and talk through them with you in advance so you have a clearer picture of what to expect before the project begins.

In general, a typical bathroom remodel takes about three to six weeks of construction. Smaller updates may take less time, while more complex renovations may take longer.

We help homeowners understand both the expected construction timeline and the full project timeline, including planning, material ordering, and any required inspections. In Chicago and throughout the North Shore, older plumbing, outdated wiring, or water damage behind walls can sometimes add time to a project. We work to evaluate and anticipate these conditions early so we can keep you informed and help your project move forward as smoothly as possible.

Our goal is to plan carefully, communicate clearly, and keep your bathroom remodeling project on track from start to finish.

Do I need to provide the materials (tile, vanity, etc.)?

Not necessarily. At Get Dwell, this depends on the project and on how involved you would like to be in selecting materials for your bathroom remodel. Some homeowners prefer to choose and purchase their own tile, vanity, lighting and plumbing fixtures, while others want guidance sourcing materials that fit the design, budget and needs of the space.

We are happy to talk through those options with you as part of the planning process. When helpful, we can introduce you to trusted local suppliers who have been serving the community for many years and are known for quality products and reliable support. Working with established local partners often makes selections easier and helps keep projects moving smoothly.

If you plan to purchase some materials yourself, we will help clarify what specifications are needed, when items must be ordered, and how those selections may affect the project timeline.

Our goal is to make sure everything is clearly defined upfront so your bathroom remodeling project stays organized, on schedule, and aligned with your vision.

Will I have a working bathroom during the project?

In most cases, the bathroom being remodeled will be out of service during construction.

If you do not have another shower or tub available during the project, we will talk through that with you in advance so you can plan accordingly. Many homeowners do have access to a powder room or another bathroom in the home, and we help coordinate the project so daily routines remain as comfortable as possible.

At Get Dwell, we review these logistics together before work begins so you know what to expect at each stage of the project. While there is typically a period when the space is not usable during a full bathroom remodel, our team works carefully to keep work areas contained, minimize disruption, and communicate clearly throughout the process.

Our goal is to make the experience as organized and predictable as possible while your new bathroom is taking shape.

Do you handle the permits?

Yes. When permits are required for your bathroom remodeling project, Get Dwell can handle the entire process or help guide you through it. Permit requirements depend on the scope of work, especially when plumbing, electrical or structural changes are involved.

As part of planning your project, we help determine what permits may be needed and talk with you about how the process will be handled. Our goal is to make sure your bathroom renovation moves forward with clear expectations, proper coordination, and attention to local requirements.

This approach helps keep projects organized, compliant, and moving forward smoothly from the start.

Can you help with the design/layout or do I need an architect?

In many cases, yes — Get Dwell can help with the design and layout of your bathroom remodel. We work with homeowners to think through how the space functions, which improvements will make the biggest impact and how to create a bathroom that works better for everyday life.

For most bathroom remodeling projects, an architect is not necessary. If your project involves updating the layout, improving storage, selecting finishes or reworking fixtures within the existing space, our team can often help guide those decisions as part of the planning process.

If your project is more complex and involves major structural changes, significant reconfiguration or conditions that call for architectural plans or additional expertise, we will let you know and help guide you to the best next step. And if you already have architectural drawings, we are happy to work from those as well.

Our goal is to make sure your bathroom remodeling project is thoughtfully planned and set up for success from the start.
